Jameis: A Story of Football, Popularity & Slut Shaming

cropped-a-touch-of-bold_banner3.pngAt my school the alleged sexual assault by Jameis Winston increasingly becomes a major point of discussion. This takes me back to the Chick-fil-A controversy nationally and at  Florida State University of adding one on campus. What was and is clear in both situations is that people need to place aside their own selfish biases to understand the core issue(s).

Victim blaming and slut shaming is never okay. At a university located in the South and with football as a major cultural factor, we have to focus on the fact that Jameis Winston is innocent until actually proven guilty and the accuser/alleged victim deserves the right to justice.

We live in a society that too often takes a serious stand on complex issues without looking at both sides. Students during the Chick-fil-A controversy would utter, “It’s just chicken.” While I believe private companies have a limited right to allocate funds as desired, the controversy over the CEO’s remarks wasn’t just about chicken, but about equality. While people can spend their money there, also understand why it’s upsetting to some of your fellow citizens.

In a situation like the accusation against Jameis Winston, all involved and uninvolved parties need to remember this is about justice for the accused and accuser. From the police officers sand victim’s family to football fanatics and onlookers, only exposing the truth matters.

People feel this allegation is only due to the football team’s success this season. This is a horrible standpoint to take, because this undermines all past and future sexual assault victims who have to find the courage to tell their story against friends, family, strangers or powerful people. We as society are responsible for any justice not being properly delivered to Winston or the victim due to supporting schools mainly based on their football history and ranking.

At a school like Florida State University, we as a Seminole nation need to have a higher focus on academics, programs and organizations across campus actually adding a positive light to this world. This includes truly supporting the growing visibility of a group like the AcaBelles as they gain national exposure and not just “sharing” and “liking” on Facebook. This includes highlighting life-changing initiatives all facets of the Student Government Association has the ability to and does make in many students lives.

When it comes down to controversy, what truly matters is uncovering and understanding all facts. These are people’s lives. Do not blame the victim. Support a full understanding of both sides of a situation. Do not assume you know a situation due to a person’s popularity (especially since popularity is fleeting). Support people living a progressive and positive light across multiple channels of life). Support justice.
