As we start to wind down from the busy days of summer and make the transition to fall, September is a great time to reflect and set new intentions. I was recently in Los Angeles and stood on the beach watching the waves as they came to shore. Each wave brought a dynamic energy to the coast and also washed away whatever the sand didn’t hold onto. It made me wonder: What do I want to release this September? What do I want to receive in my life?
I stood in the water with a notebook as the sun set and wrote “RELEASE” at the top of the page and “RECEIVE” at the bottom of the page. For 20 minutes, I wrote down a word or a sentence and then looked back at the view to see what else came to me as I listened to the waves and watched the sun dip behind a mountain. Ultimately, I left the beach with clarity on what would make me feel more fulfilled and happy over the next few months. And you can too!
Self-Care September: Release + Receive Exercise
Join me in reflecting on what you want to release and receive in the coming months.
- Pick a time and place to focus on yourself and your thoughts.
- Find a blank sheet of paper, open a new note on your phone, or start a new email to yourself with “release” in one section and “receive” in another.
- Take 5 minutes to jot down whatever comes to your mind.
- Have 10 more minutes? Now, reflect on these specific questions:
Release
1. “What has felt tiresome recently?” These things leave you feeling ready to get in bed at the end of the day, grabbing a drink to decompress, or doom-scrolling on the couch.
2. What have I been critical about?” These are the negative opinions and perspectives your mind returns to about yourself and others.
3. What rules am I telling myself that may not serve me anymore?” For example, finish this sentence: “I’m not someone who…”
Receive
1. “What do I want to feel more of?” These experiences will make you smile as you go to sleep and that you can’t wait to tell a loved one about.
2. “What activity would make me excited to start my day tomorrow?”
3. “What qualities or habits do I want to lean into more?” You may have never possessed it before, or you want to grow it within yourself.
- Take 2 more minutes and ask yourself, “Did I avoid putting anything on the list?” If you did, go back and add it.
- Be proud that you took the time to reflect. When we know what we want and what’s holding us back, we can turn that into action.
Want to put your Release + Receive list into action? I’d love to talk with you!
