I’ve been on vacation doing a lot of wandering. After grabbing brunch by myself in Dublin, I was walking back to my hotel when I noticed how the same view looked very different just by walking the reverse path. It was just as cloudy and windy but also more vivid. This was a contrast to the muted tone I saw on the way to brunch. It reminded me of a time a few months ago when I was walking home after work one day from the subway and saw a man taking a picture of something behind me. It made me look back and then entirely turn around to see what he was looking at, and it also made the person ahead of me curious too. As a New Yorker, you often expect to see something tragic or entertaining, but instead, it was something purely beautiful: sunbeams as the sun began to set.
I’ve walked this subway path for three years, and it’s become a mundane separation between the office and my apartment. I never noticed that the sun sets behind me each day as I walk home. Many stillness- and awe-worthy moments have been happening as I focused on getting to my front door. As I left this Dublin cafe, I gained a new appreciation of the same river view from a different angle.
It all served as a gentle and easily missed reminder that if you look up at your surroundings and turn around to see them from a new angle, you might gain a new appreciation for them and find a new beauty in them. Just when you think a situation has nothing left to offer you, it can still surprise you if you let it.
Want to find the opportunity in a current situation? I’d love to talk with you!
