The Little Boy Outside The Bathroom

This morning I walked to the bathroom on my office floor when I overheard a transgender little boy (maybe seven years old) correct another child in his summer camp group about calling him the wrong gender. “How many times do I have to tell you it is not “she!” You keep calling me “she!” You keep saying “she!” It is not “she!”

I almost cried as I walked into the bathroom!

He has the pure fearlessness that only children have. He has the courage to correct others, and all he wants is to be seen for who he is.

As we get older, it becomes more difficult to keep pure and open that fearless place in ourselves. However, he is a reminder to me about continuing to go back to that place.
